DESCRIPTION
TheeSTeemDISKLABELERisaGEM-basedapplicationwhichwill
printtwodifferentsizesofdisklabelsonanEpsonFX85printer
(aswellasonsomeotherEpsonandEpson-compatibleprinters).
Itusesthesubscriptfontsizetoprintthefolderandfilenames
fromtherootdirectoryonly.Foldersarelisted,first;both
foldersandfilesarealphabetized.Thenumberoffreebyteson
thediskandthediskvolumelabelarealsoprinted.Thereare
optionsforprintinga20-charactertitle,theowner'sname,and
thedatethelabelwascreated,too.Anotheroptionfacilitates
alignmentofthelabelsintheprinter.Finally,thereisan
optiontopreviewthelabelsonthescreenbeforeprinting.

BACKGROUND
Now,havingsaidallthat,IhopeyouwillfindtheeSTeemDISK
LABELERuseful.Ifyouhaveanycommentsorsuggestsforchanges
(improvementsorotherwise)pleaseleaveEMAILformeon
COMPUSERVE[72435,572]ratherthanSIGmessages,asIamnotable
tologontotheSIGsonaregularbasisandmaymissyour
message,there.
IundertookthisprogramasmyfirstGEMandCprogramming
project,i.e.,thiswasaREALlearningexperience.Itriedto
incorporateintheprogrammanycommonGEMfeatures,(e.g.,drop-
downmenus,'checked'options,texteditingindialogboxes).As
isusualinprogramming,ittookMUCHLONGERthanIhadexpected.
I'wenttothewell'manytimes,askinghelpfromthelikesof
PatrickBass(ANTIC)andRussWetmore(THANKS,FELLOWS!)whenI
couldn'tfigurethingsoutfromthemanyreferencesIhad
(includingtheMegamaxCDevelopmentSystem,theAbacusbooks--
AtariSTInternalsandAtariSTGEMProgrammer'sReference--the
Programmer'sGuidetoGEM,AdvancedC,andnumerousprograms,
articles,andotherSTinformationinANALOG,ANTIC,BYTE,and
STARTandonCompuserve).TherearestillthingsIwantedtodo
thatjustwouldn'twork,soIworkedaroundthemjusttogetthis
thingfinished.
I'vestruggledwithbuggysoftwareandflakeyhardware:NEVERuse
theunderlineinthenameofafileyouwanttoSAVETOin
Megamax,andbecarefulusingDriveEonaSupra30megabytedrive
ifyouvalueyourcode![Inallfairness,I'msure(i.e.,I
hope)theseproblems,likemanyothers,willbefixed.]
Finally,regretfullyBirmingham,AlabamaisanAtariwastelandas
farasCprogramminggoes.Therearen'tmany(readthat'any')
STCprogrammersthatI'vebeenabletolocate,aroundhere.SoI
struggleina'Hoovervacuum'(pun--checkyourmapofAlabama)as
ItrytogetahandleonGEMandContheST.Anyadviceand
otherfriendlycommunicationswillbemorethanwelcome.
WithluckandlotsofeffortandtimeIhopeIwillbeableto
